Peer Pressure

This was our topic yesterday in YF.
This is
the thing and the problem faced by teenagers now a days. As all of us can see, everybody goes to school, everybody got friends of your age just sitting next beside you and is influencing you everyday, until you don't even notice it or maybe you are the one who is causing this pressure to your friends. From what i have been noticing after these years of studying, i must say that this is the factor that is causing trouble to our society.

What are some peer pressure we faced?
Examples are:
  • Studies ( exam results, project grades)
  • Popularity
  • Branded things
  • BGR
  • Appearance
  • Language
  • Action ( vandalism, gangsterism, cheating...etc.)
  • Fashion
  • Smoking/Drugs
  • Illegal racing ( mat rempit )
  • Self-abusing ( cutting their wrist or tattooing )
  • Cliques
This are just some simple examples that we can see in daily life and some living examples, maybe just the person sitting next to you or even yourself. So it is necessary to handle this problem in a right way.

I wonder why would our peers causing pressure to us? Actually is ourselves that causes this pressure to rise. This is my point of view. Did we ever asked ourselves why we would not want to lose out to our friends? In other words, why is this " Kiasuness" our nature? As Malaysians always say that Singaporeans very "Kiasu". But actually this is just human nature. Every student would want to be the top student in their school if they could. Every employer would want to be the best and stand out from the rest. Every mother would give their children tuition if they think is necessary. So i would conclude that everybody in this world is "Kiasu".

From the talk today, Sern Wang which happens to be our adviser cum speaker of the day categorize peer pressure into two category. The spoken and the unspoken.

Spoken:
  1. Rejection
  2. Put down
  3. Reason
Unspoken:
  1. The look
  2. The example
There are some videos based on peer pressure acted by our members spontaneously.

Put down

Reason

The Look

The Example

Why should we bother the way that people think of us? I admit i am one of those people. That's why i am facing peer pressure too. For the first category which is the rejection i don't have the video because i forgotten to video. So it is very important for us to choose the right friends in school and daily life. For God has said in 1 corinthians 15:33-34.
  • Do not be deceived: " Evil company corrupts good habits." Awake to righteousness, and do not sin; for some do not have the knowledge of God. I speak this to your shame.

Because God does not forsake anybody.

Do not be deceived: " Evil company corrupts good habits." Awake to righteousness, and do not sin; for some do not have the knowledge of God. I speak this to your shame.
